lameness alert
Sep. 8th, 2005 04:08 pmTouch the Sound, a documentary about deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie is being released without subtitles or captioning of any kind.
I found this link via
rimrunner and immediately wrote Shadow Distribution via their e-mail link.
If you have the time and inclination, please write them to share your displeasure.
Please reconsider your decision to exclude subtitles from Touch The Sound. It's shocking to hear that you would take the time and effort to make a movie celebrating the challenges that people can overcome, and yet be insensitive enough to effectively eliminate the very audience that is most touched by those challenges.
The word is spreading quickly about this and it reflects very poorly on you. I'll personally be contacting every major news source and human advocacy group I can to alert them about this. While negative publicity can help certain films, I think people will share my disappointment with your decision sufficiently to boycott your movie.
I think if you stop and think about how appalling a choice you've made in this case, you'll see that no aesthetic choice comes without a cost, and this one is too high. It excludes the very people you purport to celebrate.
Thank you for your time,
I plan on doing some research this weekend on advocacy groups, and will also send a comment to the Seattle Times, the PI, the Washington Post, and the NY Times. If you have anyone else you think should hear about this, please pass on the word.
