Today was gorgeous! The sun was out! Blue skies! I could get used to this! (oops, ran out of exclamation points already.)
Class was ...slow. We all trudged down to Tully's during break to kvetch and caffeinate. After class, Elizabeth and I decided to settle back down at Tully's for our coffee date. She is really a remarkable woman. She made me think of
devinluvsrussia because she has a degree in Russian Studies (and French, I think. Masters level). We both had the same nauseated, horrified reaction to the gore of Cold Mountain. I'm glad I wasn't the only one traumatized by it.
There was also this um very sweet but embarrassing moment. As we were chatting, this elderly woman in a bright blue coat approached us and gently put her hand on my arm. I smiled up at her and she said: "I just wanted to say that I loved watching you talk. You have the most expressive and animated face. I'm sorry for staring, but it was a pleasure." She walked off while I turned beet red and nearly died.
We talked and talked and talked and suddenly it was 2pm and I was LATE. I ran to the garage and called Judy back. She was running late, too and was on her way home. I agreed to pick her up at her house since I was still downtown. I made it there first and was able to return calls while waiting. Guess what I found out? AMY & MARTIN BOUGHT A HOUSE!!! I am so freaking excited for her. She's wanted this for a long, long time. And has worked hard to make it a reality. I wish them every happiness. And it's in Hayward, where Amy and I lived together! I am so jealous that she can have La PiƱata anytime she wants now.
Judy pulled up right as we hung up and we soon headed out for our day of fun. Greenlake was simply gorgeous today. Everyone was out with their dog and we just soaked up the sunshine. Judy's theory is that it wasn't such a beautiful day, but that Seattle people are so desperate for ANYTHING that we race out shrieking, 'it's a PERFECT day!!' when it's still too dark and too cold. Well *thbpptt* to that. We caught up on 600 different items (it's amazing how much stuff piles up over two weeks) and made good time--we were worried we would miss the movie.
Girl With A Pearl Earring. Proof positive that Colin Firth is a 'bonafide sex god.' Even when playing an emasculated, adulterous character you know you should be pissed at on principle, swoonage just carries you away. He broods and a little piece of you dies because he isn't coming home to you. He looks miserable and you want to be the one who makes him smile. Why is he so beautiful? Why? Why?? I feel like those teenage freaks shrieking, "I LOVE YOU ORLY!!!" but I can't help it. Want! Want! Want!
It's like the John Cusak thing. Where even if he's playing a complete dog, you just look at his sad eyes and think, "oh but um that's ok that he did that... he's suffering, too, see??" Any other actor and you'd be swearing a blue streak at him. Ok ok, I will stop talking about this now.
He's also a talented writer. He wrote a wonderful short story in Nick Hornby's anthology, "Speaking With The Angel." Colin's short story is called The Department of Nothing and is excellent. Like him. Ok, really stopping now.
Also Scarlett Johansson was beautiful. I wanted to kiss her right on her beautiful mouth. She didn't have that many lines (the whole movie was very quiet), but her performance was spellbinding. The woman who played Vermeer's wife did an amazing job, too. Tom Wilkinson's performance as Van Ruijven was very effective. So effective I wanted to deck him. The movie was gorgeous. It was like watching a moving painting. They really captured the time and mood of the story.
Randomly: I feel like everything I watch lately is about the awful positions women have historically found themselves in at the hands of men. Hrm.
Anyhow, back to Scarlett: why is she in The Perfect Score? I hope she makes good career choices and doesn't sell out to star in shitloads of pap like so many other actresses her age. I'm intrigued by The Black Dahlia, which won't be out until 2005. Though it does have Josh Hartnett. Apparently there are like half a dozen Black Dahlia movies in the making. Weird.
Afterwards we went to India Bistro in Ballard which is one of Judy's favorite Indian restaurants. John was able to meet us out there and it was just a perfect end to a perfect day. Great food, great company. Garlic naan + chicken tikka masala = yay.
So now I'm home! And we're going swimming at 10am tomorrow! I have no idea where my goggles are. I need to get organized because tomorrow is literally packed from 10am-10pm.
Dear GOD I am so hyper!! *runs around*
