foibles and oddments
Oct. 15th, 2006 10:36 amLove is waking up at 8AM on a Sunday morning to pare and chop potatoes, carrots, and onions.
I've also been making a bizarre amount of mistakes.
1. 1 whole canned chipotle pepper in adobo sauce ≠ 1 whole can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce.
2. Ice cream does not go in the refrigerator.
3. Pot roast with a frozen center will not be as pliable in the slow cooker.
4. Boiling green beans into oblivion because you forgot the stove was on will result in mushy, ruined green beans.
5. Putting the wrong amount of flour in the bread machine will result in weird, yucky bread.
The results of the above are thus:
1. Had to go buy 500 sweet potatoes and now have an enormous quantity of chipotle-smashed sweet potatoes and must distribute amongst friends.
2. Must go buy more ice cream; mrrrrh to having wasted a half-full box.
3. Praise the lord for the defrost setting.
4. Must also go buy new green beans, the bummer is that I didn't buy more at the market yesterday because I had a full bag left and now have none.
5. Flour is cheap, and glad to have fucked this up yesterday and not five minutes before dinner.
On the plus side, the pot roast is now nicely fitted into the cooker and will do all my work for me while I scamper off to the movies. The chocolate lava cakes are in the freezer and ready to be baked at dinnertime. Another batch of the rosemary French bread is rising. Also, I learned that I can survive a mixing experience without my Kitchen-Aid bowl (which I will seemingly never get back from Ellen, because I am too lame to go pick it up).
And, all this accomplished before 10AM. The kitchen's even mostly straightened out, just waiting for one load of dishes to finish so I can load what's left in the sink.
Since I'm always running late to everything, I think I'll set the table before I go and have one less thing waiting for me when I get back home this afternoon. All that will remain then is dumping the prepared, chopped veggies into the slow cooker for the final hour and steaming the green beans and tossing it with the pesto I made two nights ago.
I'm less thrilled about taking the bus downtown in the rain, but at the same time--it'll be good practice for me, because I really want to continue taking the bus this winter.
