firefox thing
Sep. 23rd, 2008 08:58 amSo, maybe you guys already know this, but it was an exciting moment for me this morning.
The short: How to edit custom dictionary entries in Firefox.
Using Firefox for my GMail and Google Docs, I typo now and then. And when I right-click to select the correct spelling, I sometimes click Add to Dictionary because it's right smack underneath the word I want to select.
Not to be all tongue-bath-y about it, but usually I make an effort to look at words first and see if I can figure out what I've done wrong. Very often it's an 'a' v. 'e' thing (like relevant v. relevent) and I make myself fix it in the hopes that I will actually be less inclined to misspell things. (This resolution came about years ago once when I had to free-hand write a paragraph and I realized how little confidence I had in my ability to spell anything without Spell Check and decided that that had to change pronto. My spelling abilities vastly improved.) ANYHOW, sometimes I'm lazy when it's a word that I've just mis-keyed v. not known how to spell and I just right-click.
Previously this had only happened to words I didn't use frequently or misspell frequently, so I didn't bother about it. But then I accidentally accepted 'becuase' to my dictionary and as that is a word I frequently fat-finger, it was a nuisance. So I looked up how to clean up my custom dictionary in Firefox. And I would like to share with you the fruits of my efforts.
Edit Firefox’s Spelling Dictionary:
1. Close Firefox.
2. Navigate (in XP) to: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\
3. Open persdict.dat in any text editor and remove the offending word(s).
4. Close persdict.dat and re-open Firefox.
5. Voila!
