I should have made an icon for these posts, or something. Too late now and also lazy.
I think this was one of the most fun movies I've seen in awhile. I don't have a single complaint with it. It was filmed beautifully and inventively. The story was fascinating. Phillipe Petit is a complete lunatic, but an interesting one.
The movie is basically a documentary of how this group of people conspired to help Phillipe walk a tightrope between the two World Trade Center towers.
It's not much of a spoiler, because it's a historical event. You know that he lives, because there he is chatting. And I suppose it could be a spoiler that he makes it across, but again--this is historically known. And I don't think it would have been a very compelling movie if it was about an aborted event.
I think he's insane. I can't believe he didn't fall off. It was interesting to see that the event ended his relationship with his girlfriend at the time. She was interviewed for the film (and is part of the sequences) and it's really very interesting. Also one of his good friends parted ways with him after. The stress of it. The enormity of what they did. Anyhow it was sort of fascinating for many reasons. Phillipe, like many driven, talented people is clearly a total narcissist and I felt badly for his friends at times.
They filmed this in the style of a heist movie, and it was sort of perfectly done. And so funny! I wasn't expecting to laugh so much!
I am very curious about the filming--they show the planning stages and the young Phillipe looks exactly like a younger version of the real Phillipe. I can't tell if they just found some remarkably similar looking people or if Phillipe and his crew filmed themselves all the time.
Anyhow, highly, highly recommend!
