book meme!! from rolypolypony!
Jan. 6th, 2011 10:52 pmDo you snack while reading?
No, but I'm not a big snacker anyway.
What is your favorite drink while reading?
Not much of a drinker while reading, either. Water maybe, since I take some water to bed at night.
Do you tend to mark your books while you read or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
I don't mark books--not even textbooks back in school. I dislike the idea of permanently marring it.
How do you keep your place? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book open flat?
If it's paperback, I'll dog-ear. But if it's hardback--bookmarks made out of whatever I have handy.
Fiction, non-fiction, or both?
Generally fiction. It has to be a pretty engaging and well-recommended book to get me to read non-fiction.
Do you tend to read to the end of a chapter or can you stop anywhere?
My preference would be to stop at the end of a chapter or breaking point, but lately, as I get slapped in the face while falling asleep by whatever I'm reading, I just stop wherever.
Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you?
No--I don't tend to throw things.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away?
I do! And this is one of the rather nice things about my Kindle--you just highlight the word and it defines it for you!
What are you currently reading?
The Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan. Can't wait to read Leigh Butler's spoiler-y review!! I know I wax rhapsodic about Leigh here, but she is a big part of the motivation for me to actually read the series. (You're awesome, Leigh--mwah!)
What is the last book you bought?
I bought one of the Steig Larsson books--I think it was The Girl Who Played with Fire. Actually, that's not true--I bought a Pixar _Cars_ picture book for Milo!
Do you have a favorite time/place to read?
At night, when getting into bed. And now also on the bus--only heading home. So far I haven't felt like reading on my way into work--my brain just doesn't function that well early in the day.
Do you prefer series books or stand-alones?
Both!
Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over?
Barbara Kingsolver--because I've loved all of her fiction so far. (Still need to read The Lacuna. Which--is it just me, but since I haven't read it, I weirdly associate it with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.)
As for books--Water for Elephants is something I've highly recommended to people over time.
How do you organize your books?
Badly. (House and shelf reorg in progress!)
Background noise or silence?
Definitely silence. I don't do well with background noise unless I'm cleaning or cooking.

Date: 2011-01-07 07:54 am (UTC)I re-read the first 10 books I believe and I couldn't believe how much I missed out in the first reading. I'm looking forward to re-reading the whole series - all 14 books - once it's all over. I just hate waiting until 2012, most likely, for the final book. I can't believe it will all be wrapped up.

Not usually, no.
What is your favorite drink while reading?
I'm not much of a drinker while I read, either.
Do you tend to mark your books while you read or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
No! No writing in books.
How do you keep your place? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book open flat?
I never dog-ear, either, and leaving the book open is almost as bad. I use bookmarks, but they're generally napkins, receipts or whatever I have handy - usually not real bookmarks. If the book was a library hold, there's a little slip of paper that the library puts in there, so I'll use that.
Fiction, non-fiction, or both?
Both.
Do you tend to read to the end of a chapter or can you stop anywhere?
I like to stop at the end of a chapter.
Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you?
Nope - I just try to finish the book really quickly so I can move on to something better.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away?
No - I generally forget about it for a week or two and then remember and look it up.
What are you currently reading?
I just finished 1972 by Morgan Llywelyn.
What is the last book you bought?
I bought The Disappearing Spoon (about the periodic table of the elements, but it's actually pretty nerdily interesting) for my dad.
Do you have a favorite time/place to read?
Any time, but yeah, before bed is a pretty good one.
Do you prefer series books or stand-alones?
Stand-alones, usually.
Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over?
(I put off the Lacuna for a while, btw, but I thought it was pretty good - there are some real historical characters in it, and I didn't know much about them, so I thought that part was interesting. It's not as good as The Poisonwood Bible, though.) I really like Ender's Game - that and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society are probably the two I recommend the most lately. Oh, and The Help, because ♥.
How do you organize your books?
Alphabetically by author's last name. Within an author, generally by publication date, but that depends.
Background noise or silence?
Silence!
