1) My grandfather was treasurer of India during Partition and had to flee the country in secret, taking with him only his wife, children and 5 crates of books. My grandmother never, ever complained but forever mourned the loss of her sewing machine: her first gift from her husband.
2) My grandfather refused to lie on paperwork that would have got him his actual net worth from India, insisted on telling the truth and only got 10% of his money.
3) Having left all his wealth and property behind in India, upon reaching Pakistan, my grandmother and her 6 children slept in one bedroom of her eldest son's 2 bedroom flat.
