I'm so upset, I can't even talk about how bad this is.

It's just that fucking awful.

Awful.

But not completely unexpected, surely?

You know, I guess I really couldn't bring myself to believe that this would happen. Stupid? Yes. But I honestly thought Kerry would bring home the win.

Folks are scared. In times of trouble, people like to think the best of their president. To admit that he' a dangerous demagogue is too scary.

Then there's the traditional conservative business constituency, who are profoundly uncomfortable with the administration's 7 trillion dollar deficit (the big undiscussed issue in this campaign was Bush's fiscal irresponsibilty, which is unprecendented in the history of this country) but who couldn't bring themselves to vote Democrat. These people are the equivalent of the art collector who's ability to accept that his painting is a forgery is in direct, inverse proportion to how much he paid for it. They've got a lot invested in Bush, and don't want to admit that they backed a fool.

Relax. Things looked bleak when Nixon was elected. And re-elected. And Reagan. And Reagan again. And Bush 1. And Bush 2.

Jeez I'm depressing myself.
