fucking fucking fucking hell
Nov. 3rd, 2004 05:31 pmYes. Maybe I'm insane, but I wish they'd at least waited for Iowa and Ohio.
I should have been more prepared for this, but I wasn't. I really thought we'd come through. In the words of the immortal Vinzini, it's fucking INCONCEIVEABLE.
For the past four years I've increasingly hated the Bush administration, but tonight I'm pretty fixed on my disgust with 51% of this country. Four more years of lies and deceit and god-empowered bullshit. Four more years of fascism and legislative homophobia and economic distress.
WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING?
No, I'm not going to talk of fleeing to Canada. I'm just going to have to fight the battles that are sure to come as this administration, encouraged by victory, continues to drive this country into the ground.
Time to hunker down and wait out another horrible four years and hope that nothing irreversible transpires.
Very tired now. Hate everything.

Date: 2004-11-04 03:10 am (UTC)They're thinking that Kerry's message—that the entire Democratic platform—was unfocused at best and incoherent at worst.
They're thinking that like it or not, we're in Iraq now, and whether or not Bush has handled that well, Kerry was unlikely to do better.
They're thinking that the president has very little power to affect the economy one way or the other, so who cares? (FWIW, I agree with them on this one.)
They're thinking that there's nothing wrong with an overtly religious man in the White House. (Then again, they haven't met some of the Christian extremists that I have.)
They're thinking that the country isn't ready for gay marriage, and that anyway it's a state issue.
I'm not saying that I agree with them, or that I think Bush was the right choice. But the thing is, the Democratic party has been notably unsuccessful at reaching both moderates and conservatives who would vote for a Democratic candidate if they thought one was viable. Their concerns have very little to do with religion or gay rights, and a great deal to do with national security, a unified message, and a way of life that is conservative, if not especially Republican these days. (Traditionally, the Republican party was the party of less government, not that you'd know it to look at them now.)
We've survived worse. Which isn't to say that we should stop bitching because hey, things could BE worse. They might well GET worse. But I ain't throwing in the towel till it's on fire.

Date: 2004-11-04 04:21 am (UTC)But I've felt like the towel's been on fire the past four years and this is a really hard blow to get over.
I need to follow Pam's lead and just detox from all the news stuff for awhile.
