mmm tired

Weekend started off grand. Quick dinner with Sarah, then went to see Lion King at the Paramount with Judy, John and Jimmy. I'd never seen it before, and the puppetry was mind-boggling. My favorites were the giraffe, elephant and cheetah.

Saturday morning: stayed in bed late, returned phone calls, and also noted down everyone's birthday in my new red leather 2005 datebook. We loves it. I sucked last year at remembering birthdays. SUCKED. So my goal this year is to be on-task and remember the people I love in a timely fashion. I also find that the busier my life gets, the more organized I get. Because if I'm not organized, I go insane. And that's no fun.

Sarah came by as planned and we worked on resume stuff. It was really, really nice to catch up with her. With her visiting cousin and my new job we just hadn't seen each other in a while. We hung out. Worked. We tried to watch Super Size Me. But it kept fucking up. Like West Wing did the other night. And she pointed out, to my irrational enragement, that my PS2 was fucking up and no longer acting as a functional dvd player. I growled at her and she backed off. But she was making good sense. And the wheels in my head started to turn.

I really wanted steak and Sarah always wants steak, which I find hilarious. We tried to get reservations at The Met but they were booked until 10pm. So we made a quick pit stop at her place so she could change and we went down for a nice, leisurely dinner at Palomino. We had cocktails and appetizer (gorgonzola waffle-fries) and a first course (me soup, she salad) and steak. We finished off by splitting a decadent pear bread pudding. Mmmm good.

Here's the really wonderful thing about Sarah: she's a phenomenal conversationalist. And I don't think a lot of people get to see that side of her because she's so quiet. But get her rolling on a topic she loves and it's impressive. Still blows me away, even after all these years. We talked mostly about an article we'd read from [livejournal.com profile] nikkinewsnet regarding the Arabic language. Perfect and not needing to change? Or on the verge of extinction? And that morphed off onto historical empires and the evolution of language. Did I mention she's working on teaching me Latin? Quo usque tandem abutere, Cat, patientia nostra?

So, as I said earlier, Sarah had quite rationally pointed out that I needed a new dvd player. And that I have a job that pays well now. I'm still in skinflint mode, mostly, but omg. I stubbornly kept insisting I was going to get the cheapest model, but then...I was there. At the store. And they had a nice Panasonic 5-disc changer. And I used to have one (different model) that just ruled. And I'm so tired of using the PS2 controller as a dvd remote. So I decided to put in an extra $40-50 and get a decent player instead of the unknown wonder. The Fred Meyer we initially went to was out of stock, so we drove back to my place so I could at least read some online reviews and not have a heart attack about buying something unresearched (I hate unbudgeted, unplanned expenses). Then off to Lake City Fred Meyer, which was the closest one that still had it in stock.

Then...it was mine. And I kept blinking at it.

Sarah, btw, is a fucking riot when it comes to shopping. She is a massive techno-geek. Her undiluted glee at someone buying a shiny toy is very endearing. It didn't really matter that it wasn't going home with her. It took me a while to get over the shock of spending and get into the fun of it, but she was really hilarious. We came home and she even set it up for me. We both marveled at the fact that this massive thing fit into my tiny tv/vcr table. Just barely. But it fit. And the rest of the stuff fit on top of it just fine. It was weirdly perfect.

Then we watched some X-files (season 7) on my shiny silver new dvd player. It's beautiful. And it doesn't pixelate and start chewing up the screen.

I can't believe I just went out and bought this. It's really, really pretty.

Tomorrow, or rather later on today, there will be even more shopping. Now that I dress up for work (by my standards, which ain't saying much), I need more pants. Sarah's going to drive us out to Auburn Supermall and we're going to shop. Then we're going to see The Incredibles (yes, yes, AGAIN) and then go to a cafe and read Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings. I started a re-read and whined at Sarah to read with me, cause it's more fun that way. And she did! *bounce* So tomorrow should be lovely. Really I should stop and get some groceries for the week, too, and prepare. I feel bad, but I'm going to bail on my bookclub. Haven't read the book, didn't really like the parts of it I did read, and just want to chill out tomorrow.

And omg it's late, I should be asleep!
