First of all, a shrieking HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dear dear friend
jeff_nw.
I'm happy to report that the chocolate-peanut butter bars I made for Jeff came out decadently good and the hat I knit him fit. Whee!
Work went fine. It was a bit slow because I finished my projects and then had to wait around for people to review them for corrections. I kept staring at the clock because I wanted the day to end because I was taking Jeff out to dinner. Of course Jeff, foolish mortal, thought we were just going out to dinner. But for chrissakes, it's his birthday!
We briefly stopped at his house so he could feed the kitties which was awesome because I got to worship Brutus The Magnificent King of Kitties.
We then set out for Pair, which is one of my favorite restaurants. It looks like a small French cottage and has amazing food. We had a lovely Spanish wine to start. I need to get the name because it's my favorite red--a rioja. They had our table ready shortly and we had the Gougeres (herbed cheese puffs) to start. A green salad with goat cheese crostini, lamb with tapenade and a Merlot reduction which was excellent, and I'm picky about lamb. We had grilled, herbed chicken, eggplant and potatoes with a harissa sauce on the side. And their perfect, perfect macaroni and cheese which should have a far more elegant title for what it is.
Jeff's company is always fabulous. We talked about work and our friends and our neuroses. I snuck off to pee with my credit card tucked in my back pocket and got the waitress to co-conspirate with me. Muhahahaa.
Dessert was their chocolate-coffee mousse and banana bread pudding, and a muscat that was so caramel-y, it was more like port. To the point where we actually asked our waitress because we were curious. The waitress was sweet and brought out the coffee-chocolate dessert with a single lit candle. Hee. Jeff was surprised at my sneaky-ness.
When the bill came, and Jeff discovered what I'd been up to, I almost felt guilty because he looked so distraught. But for chrissakes! Birthday! In my book, it's a privilege to get to take the people you love out on their birthday night! We lingered a bit longer, chatting chatting chatting and finally left so they could get ready to close the restaurant down. It was a great night. There are only a handful of people I can spend endless time with and not need space, but Jeff is one of them. I was a bit worried that seeing me every day at work would wear on him, but I knew that really there's no such thing as Too Much Jeff.
I know I wax effusive about Jeff frequently, but what I love so much about him is how much he appreciates any effort you make for him. He doesn't expect you to do things for him, but when you do, he genuinely makes you feel like he recognizes the love that went into whatever you did. He just gets it. You know? Ahhhhh I love him. *runs around*
And to people who know me pretty well, the proof is in the fact that I cheerfully ate eggplant in his honor. He is the best. And I can easily say that I am a better person today for knowing him.
[22:09] cat: you know what's funny sarah?
[22:09] sarah: a great many things in this universe, i've found
[22:10] cat: *dry*
[22:10] sarah: but what, specifically?
[22:10] cat: i miss you. which is ridiculous because i used to see you once a freaking year.
[22:10] cat: i'm really glad you're coming over tomorrow
[22:10] sarah: aww
[22:10] cat: i importantly wrote you down in my datebook and everything *beam*
[22:10] sarah: why thank you. i'm looking forward to it too
[22:10] sarah: LOL
[22:10] cat: *grin*
[22:10] sarah: *falls over*
[22:10] sarah: you know
[22:10] cat: heeee
[22:11] sarah: and please don't take this poorly, because i don't mean it so, but you doing anything "importantly" is the funniest fucking thing ever
[22:11] cat: *dies*
[22:11] cat: no offense taken
[22:11] cat: *giggle*
[22:11] sarah: ahhh *still amused*
[22:11] cat: i hope you could visualize a slightly pompous look to my face as i did this
[22:11] sarah: yes, actually, i did
[22:11] cat: mission accomplished *grin*
[22:12] sarah: followed by your setting the pen down very precisely and adjusting the angle of the actual date book
[22:12] cat: YES!
[22:12] cat: i did just that
[22:12] sarah: clearly, i am psychic
[22:12] cat: and i gave a little satisfied emphatic nod and everything
[22:12] sarah: did you then flounce back to your work?
[22:12] cat: i did
[22:13] cat: tossed my hair over my shoulder and everything
[22:13] sarah: oh good
