pardon the squeeee
Nov. 6th, 2005 05:30 pmJeff's visit this morning was a piece of heaven. I pounced him and the poor guy eventually had to peel me off. I swear, he must exude some endorphin-like chemical, because he just makes me so damn happy. We set out for Cafe Besalu to get coffee and chat and catch up and then tragically, he eventually had to go off for his swim, and I was quite unrepentently late for Stitch 'n Bitch.
I drove to Judy's with my yarn in tow. I've been putting off all these projects, and watching Jeanne, the knitting-machine, has shamed me into picking up some of the things I've been meaning to do. It was also a nice chance for me to get to know Julie better, who is a friend of Judy's from a different group. She's a really warm and wonderful person and I hope to hang out with her more soon. So that was cool. We stitched, we bitched, and it was a good time.
Afterwards, I hung out at Judy's and we caught up on a few details about work and upcoming changes. Judy's very kindly volunteered to act as backup for Jeff who will be taking care of Hobbsie while I'm in Big Bear this Christmas. It was really a relief because Sarah will be out of town, and so will Ellie and Jeff, my other backup pet-sitters. And I'm particularly anxious about this trip because we'll have just moved the previous weekend before I leave. Jeff's been very reassuring, saying that if Hobbes seems particularly upset, he can stay there at night if needed.
Last night was also awesome. I caught a quick, early dinner with Sarah at Sofrito Rico (I can't get over how amazing their rice and beans are). And then I picked up supplies for build-your-own sundaes and drove out to Ravenna. I haven't seen some of these friends in awhile, and these bashes are always awesome. KC and Jen hosted poker night and while I didn't play last night, it was so good to be around people again. It's been an isolated, boring week. I used to be more hermitish, but clearly not anymore. I was bouncing up and down just to be out of the house and around the loving mass that is this group.
Finally, last but certainly not least, Amy sent me my birthday present! Early as always, and perfect as always. It's a book called "Dare to Repair" with a great picture of Rosie the Riveter. It's a do-it-yourself book for any woman who wants to take care of shit herself and not rely on a contractor. I'm really excited about it, because I knew I was going to need to buy something exactly like this. It's really laid out well and easy to read. Thanks again, Amy!!
Wow, Sunday's over. Or it feels that way since it's pitch-black outside. And so chilly! I'm looking forward to getting back into my routine tomorrow. Even French and Alexis resumes as of tomorrow. This week has been such a surreal departure from normalcy. I'm glad it's over, as needed and restful as it ultimately was.

Watching the LIVE debate on The West Wing. It's kind of hilarious. They're so feisty!!
It's really immeasurably cute when they stutter. I wish I had satellite so I could have seen the East Coast version. I'm dying to know what parts of this are scripted. Jimmy Smits has said that they had to read position papers and get ready to really debate this stuff, so it's not entirely scripted. Which would explain Alan Alda's complete frozen moment at the start of his opening comments. Unless, of course, that was scripted.
I wanna know, dammit!

So a large portion of my behavior at the Stitch 'n Bitch involved swearing. I'm trying to knit a hat for my brother's big bald head. So I cast on, but I cast on too much. It was enormous. It was so enormous, I could have used it as a sweater. So yes, probably too big for the circumference of J's head. Then I cut it by a lot and now I’m terrified it's too small. But I think J likes to wear his hats snug and I'm hoping to god this fucker will stretch, because I'm not undoing it again.

This is why I prefer scarves, dammit. No stress about that fitting or not fitting. However, I do rather love the color and the texture of this yarn. So I'm at least pleased there.
And as J once praised one of my very first attempts at cooking Paki food (soggy lentil basmati rice, burnt beef curry, and runny rice pudding) like it was perfectly prepared, he'll wear this damn hat and pretend it fits perfectly. I just hope it really does.
