Feb. 12th, 2005 11:25 pmJudy called as I was getting ready to leave and asked if I would pick up two cheeseburgers from Dicks for Jen. We love our friend Jen who has a hilariously suspicious relationship with food. She is one of those people who doesn't like her food to touch her other food and is ...well, she's a picky eater. But she's so adorable and sweet and good natured that it's just a quirky part of her we love.
I got to Judy's place and KC and Jen were already there stuffing gyoza. Jeanne and Chuck and Kim were there shortly and then Ellie and Jeff arrived. We all bustled around cooking gyoza, deep frying lumpia and Jeanne made her amazing 1pt Chinese salad. Ellie and Jeff brought a sushi platter and we warmed up my quiche. God, there was so much food and it was all exciting. We ate, drank and were very merry.
People liked the quiche but I think it was too fishy. Must use less salmon next time.
Ellen rolled out the felt and Jeff passed around the chips. I suck at poker. So very, very much. So I played with abandon. Hurling in chips even when my cards sucked. I almost won a huge pot but dammit, John beat my three-of-a-kind with a straight. But it was fine. I got out the peanut butter chocolate pie and dished it out. Jeff's suggestion was awesome. The presentation was much nicer as a round cake than as bars (the bars just looked like brownies with frosting) and there was much oohing, ahhing, and consumption. It was a shocking night because this was the first time Ellen and Jeff didn't win. I think they were holding back out of pity.
It was a blast. We were so damn loud. Much shrieking laughter and drinking.
We all pitched in to help Judy clean up and then lingered idly over more random conversation. Kim and Chuck were trying to calm down my terror of lake swimming, but hearing about duck poop doesn't do much to allay my fears. Gah. Brown water. So gross and so wrong. Oh well, that's at least a ways away. Nature. Eeesh. I don't think I could do this at all if I wasn't reasonably confident of my swimming skills.
Judy and John laughed at us from their porch as Kim and I held hands as we cautiously made our way down Judy's steep stairs. We both hate stairs. I think it's because we're short and the next step is so far down and dark.
What a lovely night with lovely friends.
KC and Jen talked me into coming to their L word night next weekend. I haven't watched it since the first few episodes, but it should be a fun night. I'm really excited about the triathlon. Kim and Jeanne are going to do it too and we're going to walk together. So I won't be alone at the end of the line at least, I'll have my friends pacing it out with me. I hadn't expected that. I figured we'd all do our own pace and they'd be cheering for me at the end. It just motivates me to do my part and not hold them back!
Tomorrow: hanging out with Sarah and her visiting mom and sister! They're such incredibly nice people, I can't wait to see them again. We're going to do the Seattle Underground Tour. I've been meaning to do that since I moved here, so I'm really looking forward to that!
