With the new 6gb capacity ipod release, the 4gb versions have dropped to $199. Or $179 on Amazon. I refused to get one on principle back when they were $300 (and I was, um, poor). But now I've got a nice checking/savings dealie going on and it looks like my contract will almost certainly be extended (though, of course, there are no guarantees yet). So hrm, hrm. What to do, what to do.

[Poll #443141]

My entire mp3 collection is currently under 4gb. It could work. Especially if I took a few minutes to delete duplicates and things I hate. (That's right, Eminem, fuck you.)

or...you can spend $200 on a 30 GB mp3 player. I dunno, ipods are the acid washed jeans of the aughts...they are super trendy right now, but they aren't the most user friendly, certainly not the best deal for your money and have a horrible battery life. the software sucks, too. i've had friends in tears because they lost all their music because itunes fucked them up the ass. so do your research before spending the money on an mp3 player. and 4 gig ain't shit, seriously, if you spend $150+ you want an mp3 player that can accomodate your music collection for years, so you don't have to keep deleting music to add music.

and if you DO really need an ipod, get a real one. the price per gig difference is staggering...you pay about 300 times more per gig for a mini than you do for a regular ipod literally, about $15 per gig v. $50 per gig. and i think the luxury of having all that space is worth it.

You make some great points here, M. But, I don't want to shell out that much money for a portable music device. I have 125mb now on a Nomad and I think the 4gb jump will be impressive enough for me for now. $179 just knocks it into a range that I can comfortably afford for something like this. And I'll admit it. I'm a sucker for how cute and trendy they are.

I'm a marketing vampire's dream come true.

I refused to buy them when they were $400, but I can handle this price. Eventually, (especially if this job turns permanent) I'll upgrade to a swankier model and pass this one on to my little cousins.

well, it is obviously dependent on the amount of music you have. if 4 gb is enough for you, then spending the extra money, even if it's a better deal, is not necessary. it's like going to costco to buy a 100-pack of something when you only need a few because the unit price is cheaper. and if the mini can accomodate your music comfortably, and you keep it around for a while, by the time you need the extra space the regular ipods with 30-40 gb maybe be in the $100 range by that time. that's what sucks about electronics...you spend money on something, and the next day it's on sale. i've had my player for a year and it's gone from $250 to $199...now i'm afraid to upgrade because i want to keep holding out for the next innovation and subsequent price drop.

I know what you mean. It always takes me forever to upgrade because I keep waiting for the prices to drop lower...and lower...

It was not too long ago that my 125mb Nomad was $200. I think I got it 2-3 years ago. Which is light years for technology these days.

Blah iPod.

I want a Mac mini :)

I think I need to continue living in my little studio even after I have money just I can afford to buy unnecessary but exciting electronics.

You are so funny. All last year it was nonstop iPod craving.

I so have no desire whatsoever for a Mac mini, I can't get over that you actually want one. But then I've yet to get the appeal of a PDA, too.

And why do you think I don't want to move out of my tiny place even if I get a perm position? *grin*

Oh, I still have iPod craving. I'm just so bitter about it now that I don't know if I'll ever actually buy one. Until they're super cheap, anyway.

Mac mini is so CUTE. Really I just want a Mac to play with. We all know I would mash it to bits if I had to use it as my main PC. They're only $500, after all. And so shiney. It would look very pretty on my desk.

I spose. Shiny is very yay, though.

I want a shiny silver ipod for now. Next paycheck. I am on the verge of buying 5 airline tickets. It's freaking me out a bit. (3 for me, 2 for my folks). Oy.

Except for the part where I pay a ransom in airfare this month. Mowr.

Also, I hate travel. But I'm cranky today.
