idiot boxing
Apr. 29th, 2005 01:59 pmFor the past several years, I haven't watched much TV.
I'd watch West Wing and Survivor regularly, and that was it. I rented a lot of movies, sure, but nothing that kept me hooked from week to week.
Recently, and I blame Stace entirely for this, that's all changed.
Suddenly I am watching 9million tv shows a week. And like all network tv, it can be divided up into either cop shows or medical drama. Except for the Gilmore Girls, which Jeff refers to as an Estrogen Fest. Oh, and Family Guy--which, yay, new eps starting May 1st!
Gilmore Girls - I have no idea why I wasn't watching this obsessively for the past 5 years. I'm completely hooked. Season 3 out on dvd soon!
Amazing Race - Also no idea why I didn't watch this all along, considering the rave reviews it's gotten. It's very very good. And Phil isn't the bitch Jeff Probst is.
Veronica Mars - Love it. Snarky, smart, fun. Very intriguing. And doesn't needlessly fuck with you. (Unlike Lost.) The continuity department deserves brownies and it's a really well thought out show. Kristen Bell is very cute.
House, M.D. - I worship Hugh Laurie. I've only caught the first episode, but I have the rest waiting to be watched this weekend.
Marathon!
Lost - I hate JJ Abrams. More on this below.
Survivor - I watched it when it was good, I watched it when it was crappy. Happily it's in the good phase these days.
Eyes - This is just a fun show. Pretty. High-tech. Snarky. And it's funny. I've missed Tim Daly. I had the biggest crush on him back in his Wings days.
CSI - Sometimes I watch, sometimes I don't. It just doesn't hook me like it's hooked many of my friends. But it can be pretty damn good watching.
Without a Trace - Still phenomenal. It's making me insane that they haven't released Season 2 on DVD yet. I want it now, goddammit. Compelling acting, well-written characters, fascinating plots. It needs to win more awards.
Numb3rs - I don't care if the math is illogical, Rob Morrow is cute. And I like watching the all-guy dynamic in their house.
What Not To Wear - Stacey and Quentin are bitches that need to chill, but they do good work. I love my TiVo so I can ff through most of their bitching to the end when the victim looks fantastic.
Grey's Anatomy - Patrick Dempsey is cuuuute. And Sandra Oh makes anything worth watching. Even a show that is clearly the OC meets ER.
Family Guy - So funny. So brilliant. SO WRONG. I <3 Stewie.
I would be obsessed with Deadwood but I don't have HBO and refuse to get it, because it requires a cablebox and I fucking hate cableboxes. So I will have to wait for the dvd. Which in some ways is okay because then Sarah and I can sit unmoving on the couch for three days and watch it in a gluttonous feast.
Lost. The first time I watched it, I thought: Enh. Then Stacey would not shutthefuckup about it. So I gave it another shot and loved it. That was when I watched like 12 consecutive episodes in two days. And I loved the format and how there was this overall arc, and sure there were cliches, but there were also really intriguing backstories (Jin & Sun!).
But I feel like the show really fucks with my goodwill. The weeks and weeks of reruns. The lack of explanation for anything. The fact that now that it's not likely to be a one-season wonder, the finale is unlikely to give us any satisfaction, but leave on some hideous, torturous cliffhanger.
The episode with Locke? Where every 10 minutes you think "Ah! That's where he lost the use of his legs!" Only to be met with a giant, "Psyche!!" was irritating. I don't mind being a good sport and I love mystery. But I don't like being fucked with. Feeling like I'm repeatedly being teased with no payoff. And I have the cynical suspicion that it's because it's easier to wave the promise of great mystery than it is to produce a worthy reveal.
To contrast with Lost, I offer Veronica Mars. Granted, the season isn't over, but creator Rob Thomas promises that the overlying arc will be explained and all mysteries will be revealed by the finale. And every episode does seem to peel back another layer, instead of just adding more confusion and random mystery.
I think Lost will fuck with us for as long as people tune in. It's never going to give us the satisfaction of knowing wtf is going on. I've been down this road with JJ Abrams before. Since Judy/John loved Alias so much, I gave it a really big try. I rented the first three seasons, and omfg it's the dumbest show ever. Grrr. Jennifer Garner does wonderful things to a bikini and the fight stunt coordinator is great, sure. But she can't act, dammit!! And the show is full of really insipid characters!!
Part of Season 2 had me hooked. But the show doesn't have any respect for itself. No one ever really dies, even if you see them decapitated. No one who is good ever stays good. It's just annoying. It has no rules to abide by, so it just goes all over the place. It doesn't just suspend your disbelief, it wants to contort it into a parallel universe. So yeah, stopped watching that after being irritated through all the season 3 discs.
So yeah. I think I just hate JJ Abrams. I think if Lost was someone else's show, I'd feel less cynical about it. And god, I hope I'm wrong and something really cool comes out of a season of intense curiosity. But grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I'm going to be really mad if we get to the finale and don't have any idea wtf is going on.

Date: 2005-04-30 02:22 am (UTC)And I just hate JJ Abrams because I think his shows suck. He needs to take his carefully constructed ambiguity and go make bad shows elsewhere, where people are okay with the plot itself being.. the carefully constructed ambiguity of the plot. *bitchy mood*

Date: 2005-04-30 02:27 am (UTC)They cut out all the good parts. It was excruciating to watch. And it pissed me off rather a lot.
Without audio, I can't imagine what it looked like. Mostly it had voice-over narration, so it wasn't just what you were seeing. There was a guy explaining and filling in all the storylines.

Date: 2005-04-30 02:30 am (UTC)Wow. Yeah. It was extremely weird, and not so exciting. I kept thinking, omg get to the show already.
