I have to start with kudos to Amy for being so wonderful throughout the whole flight ordeal. I had to constantly call her with updates, including the final 3:30am call for a ride from the airport. She was completely cheerful and supportive and a great friend. I felt bad robbing her of sleep the night before a big event, but Amy's a trooper.
I asked her to wake me up around 8:30am because I didn't want to leave Lucy (the bridesmaid hosting the shower) stranded. I finally got to meet Amy's darling doggie, Murphy. She was gorgeous and sweet and we got along fabulously. Martin, Amy's charming fiancé, made us chocolate-chip pancakes for breakfast and can I just say that every time I meet Martin I love him more. He is really a fantastic guy. It kills me that he hates Seattle (mainly due to the rain, as he's an avid golfer), because Amy would move up here in a flash and my life would be complete, dammit. I miss her.
We ate, showered, dressed, and set off for the grocery store. I got my share of ingredients and we made our way to Lucy's. Lucy had been apprised of my flight and was dealing with her own tragedy. The engine of her car fell out while she was driving to the store the day before. So we were quite a catastrophic pair. It was nice to finally meet Lucy after all this time. Amy left with Murphy and Lucy's dog and Lucy and I got started. Maria and Tina arrived shortly after and preparations were underway.
Guests arrived promptly at 1. We had the food laid out, Tina was MC for the games and she proceeded to pin us all. It was very cool to see the various members of Amy's family (who I've known for ages now and absolutely love). It was also really awesome to finally meet her other groups of friends (from the various schools where Amy has been a teacher). We'd all been hearing about each other for ages, and this was a really nice treat. Amy is definitely loved. We took turns introducing ourselves and sharing how we've met Amy and it was just nice. Amy was red and glowy and I felt like a very proud older sister. Also, I won the trivia game 'Who Knows Amy Best," which made me happy.
I snuck off to the back to work on the tile project, still not complete. Poor Maria's tile had shattered, MaryLou had left hers at home. I bullied people into the back room and made them do or re-do their tiles and then we finally brought it out at the end. Mission. Accomplished. Whew.
By the end of the party, I was ready to pass out. The last few guests lingered and I thought I was going to die. Things finally wrapped up and we hauled the gifts back to Amy's home. I called my brother and said that because of the late flight, early morning, I needed to put off my visit with him and the kids to Sunday. I didn't have the energy to run around with my nephews, and I didn't want to just show up and collapse instead of having fun. It worked out, happily.
Amy and I lounged upstairs on her bed, which is the most comfortable thing ever. She had to pack for a camping trip, and we caught up. It was the best part of the trip. Martin periodically came in to chat with us, and he's hilarious, and quite a perfect match for Amy, which made me so happy I couldn't even feel green about it.
What's also cool is seeing how Amy has changed over the years. She was (by an enormous stretch) the best roommate I ever had. But we were young, and she was moody and temperamental. But age and experience has really agreed with her. And we both agree that getting out of her rotten relationship with F was the best thing that ever happened to her. She isn't pissed off all the time now. She isn't dealing with doing all the work in her relationship all the time. She isn't dating someone who is thin-skinned and responds like a four-year old to criticism. She's worked out a lot of her demons, too, and is a very content person. It was downright inspiring to see what an accomplished and happy person she's become.
We all went out for dinner, finally, to La Piñata. Best Mexican food in the universe as far as I'm concerned. It was orgasmic. Martin bought dinner despite my protests and we all went back to watch comfort-tv and pass out. It'd been a long, long day. But I was so grateful that I'd actually made it there on time, and that Amy really had a great time at her shower. It made all the work of the past months worth it.
Of course when I got upstairs to sleep, I couldn't. So I tossed and turned for a long time before sacking out.
