Wow, that's one exhaustive meme! One hardly knows where to begin ...

I'm with you on the "believe in" stuff; pretty much exactly. Not quite the same, but oddly parallel: I studied Comp Lit (English, Spanish languages) and work in Biotech (not what I studied, not what I wanted, I just landed here).

Questions: Were you just born in Karachi, or did you spend part of your growing-up, there, too? I've never been, but I think of Sara Suleri's book Meatless Days ...

And why NW Seattle, specifically? I mean, why do you prefer that part of the city?

Also, speaking of bookstores and cats, [livejournal.com profile] sleepwhenimdead and I are pondering whether to try to buy the Capitol Hill Twice Sold Tales franchise. Have to say that it seems like it'd be cool to go there to work every day, instead of the office. But I don't think anyone's going to loan us the money. Plus, I'm pretty sure that going into business together would completely ruin our friendship, so that's right out. In short, I think I prefer just spending time amidst the shelves, petting the cats ...

First of all, I love your icon!

Wow, that's one exhaustive meme!

I know! It was a narcissistic joy.

I'm with you on the "believe in" stuff; pretty much exactly.

It's funny though that my lack of beliefs don't keep me from being completely spooked by scary, supernatural movies. I'm intrigued by your comment, though--how are your beliefs parallel, but not quite the same?

Were you just born in Karachi, or did you spend part of your growing-up, there, too?

We moved out to Chicago when I was two-years old and while I went back for a brief visit when I was 12, I've never really lived there. I just checked out the Amazon blurb on the Suleri book, though I've never read it. Did you like it?

And why NW Seattle, specifically?

Most of my friends live in north Seattle, and most of the places I go tend to be north. I haven't explored much of south Seattle, though West Seattle has its own charm.

And the idea of buying a bookstore with cats is very exciting. I don't think I could do it though, because not only do I love my job, I don't think I'm cut out for the terror of owning my own business. It's always tricky to balance business relationships with other relationships though, so good luck there if you decide to try it :)

how are your beliefs parallel, but not quite the same?

Actually, the "parallel" referred more to the next sentence, i.e., the fact that my education and work sort of parallel yours: you studied biology and English, I studied Comp Lit & wound up working Biotech.

My beliefs are pretty much identical: differences might perhaps come out in the details. On the God question, I could conceive of a sort of impersonal one, kind of like Jiddu Krishnamurti's. But my experience of the world makes me very skeptical of the personal God of the Abrahamic religions. Heaven & hell make sense to me as states of mind (the latter being the more familiar one). Aliens? Uh, sure, someplace, out there, probably nothing like us, probably too far away for us to ever actually encounter. The Zodiac? Makes no sense, but I've read descriptions of Capricorn that do fit me (spiritually old when I was young, getting younger as I get older ...)

I just checked out the Amazon blurb on the Suleri book, though I've never read it. Did you like it?

I think that the earlier chapters on her childhood are really well-written and moving, but the book lost my interest as Suleri got older and cattier. (She's an academic in the US, now, & I've heard that the catty part has become a very negative part of her reputation ...)

I haven't explored much of south Seattle, though West Seattle has its own charm

I'm a Capitol Hill denizen, although I'm also fond of Queen Anne, Ballard, Wallingford, et al. I haven't done much exploring in North or West Seattle, though!

I don't think I'm cut out for the terror of owning my own business

Me either; I think I need to let my friend down gently, on this one.

What do you do in Biotech, if you don't mind me asking?

But my experience of the world makes me very skeptical of the personal God of the Abrahamic religions.

Yeah, the older I get, the less sense they make. And really, the beliefs they advocate mostly make me sad.

Capricorn that do fit me (spiritually old when I was young, getting younger as I get older ...)

That's very cool :)

I love Capitol Hill, but I have to admit the lack of parking makes me slightly homicidal. It's a great area if you're not driving around!

Me either; I think I need to let my friend down gently, on this one.

Good luck with that, it's never fun is it?

What do you do in Biotech, if you don't mind me asking?

My company is an independent health care research firm specializing in health outcomes research: this includes qualitative research in the form of patient and provider questionnaires on topics like patient satisfaction and health economics research. I work on the questionnaire side. We design questionnaires, impliment them in clinical settings, and analyze the results (it's called "psychometrics"). Personally, I do journal research, collaborate on proposals and research reports, table data, take and transcribe focus group minutes, things like that. And here comes the morally dubious part, our clients are--guess who?--drug companies. I live in dread of the day I hear someone asking us to do something scientifically unsound and how our senior scientists will respond. This is so NOT what I was meant to be doing!

May I ask what you do?

I love Capitol Hill, but I have to admit the lack of parking makes me slightly homicidal.

Thankfully, I don't drive unless I'm visiting family, back east! (And that's just cuz they all live in the 'burbs ...)

The work sounds interesting, but I know drug companies can be creepy. What would you rather be doing?

My company develops biotech software (gene/protein expression stuff), but my work is largely working on software manuals and marketing pieces (from web-stuff to press releases to datasheets, etc).

It's been exciting to use my science background again and I have to confess, documentation makes me geekily giddy. It's a long and strange journey here from the past ten years in IT, so in just these past 6mos, I finally feel like I'm where I want to be.

I'm much more interested in things poli sci, these days: policy development, electoral systems, political news. I belong at a lectern or in a newsroom!
