In less happy news, I'm going to kill my ISP. My connection has been teh suck for some time now. Slow. And not just slow, but unusable for anything beyond simple web-browsing or email. Like, I can't fucking send an attachment via email. Even ftp is dog slow. Like 192 bytes/sec. Yeah. Bytes. They're unresponsive to email, unless I write repeatedly. I've pared my network down to one router, one pc, Ethernet connection.

So I wrote them again. And will call them when I'm home on Saturday. And if they can't help me fix it, I may have to switch to fucking Comcast. Bleargh.

But seriously, this is worse than dial-up. Everything just times out. Grrr.

Blech. DSL? I'm hoping to avoid cable as long as I can -- there was even a post recently on a friend's board about how completely Comcast sucks. Resist the monopoly!

You don't have any background tasks running, do you?

I do have DSL. Through Blarg.net. And it's been a great year and a half with them, but I'm really annoyed with their unresponsiveness.

I have a friend with Comcast. We hate Comcast, but I think her connection has always been much faster than mine. They do, however, suck rocks as a company.

Is this the company hosting the guns for everyone website?

I know that there are different scales of DSL. I think where cable tends to do well is that it has a better overall available speed, but where they do badly is that that speed is shared by a neighborhood -- so that if a lot of people around you start using it heavily, your bandwidth gets reduced, while DSL is all dedicated to that one line.

I don't know if they're hosting that...

And you're right--DSL works point-to-point and has nothing to do with bandwidth hogging from neighbors. I splurged on more than just the basic flavor of DSL which is why I'm particularly annoyed.

Here's hoping this is a solvable problem!
