on tipping
Jan. 12th, 2006 08:00 amJeff and I were discussing how much, if any, tip should be given to the guys delivering my furniture. I had no idea. Jeff pointed out that they were going to be paid for delivering it, so a nominal tip was right. I thought $5 was too low, but my concern that $20 would be appropriate was wrong, too. And obviously, 15% of the furniture cost was out of the question. So I did a cursory look and here is (one of many, I'm sure) guides to tipping:

$10 seems reasonable to me. I just need to stop by and get some cash somewhere today on my way home.
I'm hoping these guys aren't going to be pissed that I want their help in moving this shelf. Or, rather, in flipping it. I've cleared most of the area, I just hope they're... um. Nice. And not cranky.
I'm anxious about my work meeting, so I'm up early. All dressed, cat fed, hair brushed—if still wet. And I think I will trundle into work early now.

Date: 2006-01-12 04:18 pm (UTC)Huh. I didn't tip our deliverypeople at all. I figured that since we were paying not only the godawful purchase price but an additional $50-100 for delivery, that we'd already paid for the privilege of having large Russian guys (why's it always Russians around here??) carry the whateveritis into the house and set it up if that's part of the arrangement. Nobody set the house on fire for our non-tipping. :) Of course, I never asked them to move/lift stuff that wasn't part of their original job description... $10 sounds perfectly reasonable for that kind of aid; if you aren't asking them to spend over an hour on it, it even works out to a nice hourly wage!

And it won't honestly take more than 10 minutes of their time, so that works out to a spectacular hourly wage *grin*
