used bookstores rock
Nov. 23rd, 2003 05:20 pmSo today was nice. Met everyone for breakfast. Though it was a little weird. Ellie and Jeff just got married, Judy and John have been married forever and Gigi is getting married next month. I felt like Bridget at the Smug Marrieds Party. Happily without Cosmo or Woney.
Afterwards went to Judy's to watch a bit of LotR (Director's Commentary) until she fell asleep and then I set out for U Village, where freaking B&N didn't have a copy of John Irving's Hotel New Hampshire. Bugger.
So after touching base with a concerned Debbie ("There're only two weeks left!"), I set out to explore some used bookstores. The second one, Couth Buzzard on Greenwood/72nd (recommended by the wonderful lady at Vandewater Books on N 45th) was a hit--paperback only $2! Having left my damn cash at home, I had to buy a second book to reach the minimum charge rate, so bought the first of the Lillian Jackson Braun "The Cat Who..." series. This one is The Cat Who Could Read Backwards.
I also bought, at B&N, The Girl With The Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier and I Don't Know How She Does It by Allison Pearson. You know, I've been shopping at Amazon for so long, it always shocks the pants off of me how expensive paperbacks have become. I'm still stuck in a happy mental place where paperbacks cost $5.95. When the fuck did they all become plus-$13? I was returning a hardback book and really shouldn't have bought the other books as I ended up paying a bit extra even with the return. Gah!
Ugh and now my coffee's gone cold. Ick.
I really should work on my assignment for Tuesday. But I reallyreallyreally don't want to. And really, Hobbes doesn't want me to, either. He wants me to cuddle up with him and my new books. It's important to um be there for your pets. And acknowledge their needs.
Rationalization, it's my very own special gift.
