sense and syntax
Feb. 25th, 2004 07:28 pmSO glad I went to the Writer's Workshop Thing.
I tend to combine my pathological shyness with shameful laziness and might not have ventured out in the rain today for this workshop, but the lure of Jan was too much.
Jan is such a freaking exceptional teacher. I know we all prefer different instructional styles, but each and every one of us in the certificate program left TC401 with a healthy chunk of worship for her. This fact was made clear today when 5 other people from my program showed up, most taking off extra time from work to do so.
I was a little nervous about seeing her again because I'd had an email exchange with her a month back where I ended up with a lot of egg all over my face. I was convinced we'd had a talk last quarter and believed she was teaching TC402 (otherwise known as My Tuesday Night Class That Sucks Enormous Ass), but not for our evening program. So I emailed her a polite, restrained rant about TC402 and asked if I could switch to her day class.
Well, turns out she isn't teaching it, has never taught it, and never plans to. She suggested I contact our program head if I had a problem.
D'OH. So off I slithered, tail between my legs.
And since I'm paranoid, I felt hyperconscious that she had me now pegged as a moron. Well, I wasn't going to let that keep me from her instruction. At the end of a great, if too short, workshop, I went up to say hello and to say that I hoped she didn't mind the email. Well, she was very nice about it, and as my fellow certificatees banded around me, they all chorused in about how awful Tuesday was, and begged her to teach the class (and all the classes next quarter).
So I feel better. At least she knows it's not just me.
The workshop was good. It was about organization in technical writing. I'm looking forward to the second part in April. In an hour and a half, she gave me a better understanding about writing, editing and organizing than I've learned in TC402 all frigging quarter.
Tonight: Survivor! Tempted to let it record until 9 and then rewind and watch. I have little patience for commercials. And since I've ditched the annoying cable box, I've started taping/watching Without a Trace, too. Great show, that.
[UPDATE: Oh. Sweet. Jesus. It'll be exciting the day I get the days of the week right. Note to self: It's not Thursday, dipshit.]
Afterwards, I think I'm going to bundle up in front of the tv and play an obscene amount of FF-X2. Yay for me.
Finally got my ride to the airport squared off. I picked the one Thursday Judy doesn't have off, and Ellie and Jeff are out of town. Big brother O to the rescue. Happily, it fits his schedule. I got my work schedule squared away so I will have an honest to god week off! That is exciting, even if it's unpaid. Now I just have to get another set of duplicate keys made (ones that work this time) and I'm all set.
Have renewed efforts to get Sarah to come visit and/or preferably LIVE here.
I think tomorrow I'm going to IHOP. I still want those fucking pancakes. There's another seminar thingie on Usability, but I'm not sure I'll go. Obviously, Jan isn't teaching it. And it's early, ick. And shit, new SiP today but forgot to go get it. Well, not going back out there tonight but will buy en route to pancake consumption joy.
