I was talking to Mary today re: the gay marriage thing (she got home while I was at work and we went out to dinner and chatted and oh the hilarious story she told that I must share with you next time we talk). She made a different point than most people have been. HER thing is, she doesn't see why being married entitles you to all these benefits. Just by virtue of being married. Children having nothing to do with it, as claiming a child as a dependent is not legally relevant being married (so she said.. I personally have no idea how that all works). It's not just gays being discriminated against with current marriage law, it's single people in general. Why, she asks, does an exclusive sexual relationship entitle you to rights? Which is a point. Kind of like, Why does an exclusive sexual relationship entitle you to your sexual partner's health insurance benefits?
I don't know that I agree with her (and gosh, not up on my marriage law), but still found it interesting.
And didn't blurt WELL I'M GAY, AND UNLIKE YOU, DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE THE OPTION AT ALL, though I rather wanted to.
Mary makes a good point. A point I'll bitterly agree with more and more as the years go by and I can't get my cat covered on my spinster insurance plan. BUT--so long as straight people have these benefits, gay people should not be discriminated against. (Yeah, I know you know this).
Once that's resolved, we single people can start protesting against the smug marrieds.
And you showed more restraint than I would have *grin*
