It's a little weird, but I love cleaning up after parties. And I mean, not just my own. Everything is so ridiculously messy, that I get a weird kick out of organizing the chaos into neat, orderly piles for the dishwasher, putting away linens. I think I would love it a lot less if I didn't have a dishwasher, obviously. Kitchen mess doesn't gross me out at all.

Things are mostly tidied up now, I think one more load of dishes and it'll be done.

For some reason, I find cleaning and organizing my office to be a Herculean task. Because the past couple of days have been so packed, I really wanted to force some home-time into today. I think the office is so hard because it is a problem without a current solution. My bookshelves are exploding, and despite having an enormous, barn-door-sized desk top, there's no way to organize the insanity. And I clean it and it just gets messy again, in like days. Argh. But the ridiculous thing is--it only takes like 20 minutes to clean it (the desk, not the exploding bookshelves).

I decided not to make the drive out to West Seattle this morning. Instead, OB, Em and I will have dinner tomorrow and I can fork over the stew then. I'm meeting Tony at 5 for more disc-exchange-y-goodness, and then I can walk over to the Paramount for Wicked. So I have the entire glorious day to myself!

What I really want to do is sit on the couch and catch up on tv, but I have to clean this desk. However, it seems, by writing about it, I don't have to actually do it. Hrm.

*hauls self off by scruff of neck*

I don't know what to tell you about the books....I have way too many too...but I have an anal and dorky way of organizing piles without much effort. We have 3 desk trays (Amy, Martin, To File). The huge pile is sorted into 3 smaller piles that we deal with when we feel like it. I've filed a few things and thrown stuff away from my pile...Martin's pile is just sitting there. But, since it's not on the desk, something he needs won't accidently get thrown away.

You could even do letter boxes with lids to hide the pile even more ;)

Good luck with the office....piles of paperwork suck.

I have a system like that, too --an inbox where I dump all incoming bills and an outbox where things that have been dealt with sit until I feel like filing, which = never.

And then, what ultimately happens is that I get busy and start throwing things on the desktop. Books, mags, computer stuff, and all matter of random crap. It doesn't take long to deal with once I sit down--but I never want to do it.

For me, it's always harder to keep things tidy if every single item doesn't have a place where it belongs (laptops, French books, etc). It all comes back to me needing more bookshelves!

Your desk is bigger than ours...if we have a pile o' stuff, we can't use the computer...so it forces some sort of organization.

Things without places to go suck. We had that problem when I moved all my stuff from work into the garage. We had to take everything out and find a place for it....garage is much cleaner now.

Is there a reason why you don't want to buy more bookcases? Says the woman who has (as of two days ago) 19 of them. :) I'm sure there IS a reason, but it sounds like the solution....

I don't currently have any place to put them :)

But, I just got rid of the loveseat that was in the bedroom, so now I can actually handle another one. This winter, I'm taking the rest of my vacation days to work on house stuff. Either built-in shelves or turning the office closet into a giant bookshelf--something.

(But a totally valid question!)

Yeah, I figured it was probably something like that. I imagine it's rather frustrating for you. Although, really, I agree that a bookcase is better than a love seat any day. :) Built-in shelves sound amazing, too! Spending the vacation days fixing the place up is a great plan, and hopefully some sort of Shelf Solution (tm) will help a lot with the stuff that's trying to drown you.

(I'm spending my week off in December refinishing floors and rearranging the zillions of bookcases, so we can suffer together....)

And I look forward to commiserating in December :)
