You know, the weather just kills me. It didn't look like the snow was going to start up again no matter how many times I looked outside the window. And now, I look, and everything's covered.
And of course, tonight I didn't bring my laptop home. Grr. Why? Because I am an idiot.
It sure is pretty out there, though. I wonder if it will last the night.
Speaking of idiots...
Ilan. I'm pretty sure he's beyond redemption now. As much as I tried to understand his complete asshattery last episode, his continuation with it this time, complete with fucking up his own dish to mock Marcel's 'foams' really just made him look stupid.
I can't believe both sides fucked up such simple restaurant concepts.
The chicken wing was totally out of place at the diner, and um --oops to the undercooking. At least Marcel didn't run around blaming everyone else for it.
I'm not sure if Elia's burger sucked or if Cliff ruined the burger with his delayed service. And out of all the people to serve well, he fucks up serving for the judges?
I'm not sure what crack Sam was smoking. How on earth did he think watermelon and gorgonzola would taste good? Did he try it before sending it out? It's a fucking Italian restaurant and he couldn't come up with a better dessert than that?
And what on earth was up with the oreo-lemon thing? What weird combinations. I think it's great to try inventive recipes, but it's better to execute something straight forward that people actually want to put in their mouths.
Just depressing to see such awful food.
However, was glad to see Mike go. If there's one thing the judges can't stand it's someone who just sits back and coasts. Try to do something and have it explode, but at least try. I was shocked Mike did so well last time, but he'd stuck around far longer than expected.
I do think Sam will win, and mostly I think his work is pretty amazing (this challenge notwithstanding). I like Elia personally, but I haven't been bowled over by her creativity and she seems too passive to survive as a top chef. Maybe in a few years. Also --I really hated how she handled dealing with Cliff about who worked the front room. Don't say you're fine with the backroom and then pout when someone else says, "Okay --I want to do the front room." Speak up for what you want and find a reasonable way of dealing with it.
Marcel. He's so goofy. I disliked him so much, but the whole bullying-thing has really put me on his side. And as much as he's deemed a prick, he was the first one to hug Mike and wish him well, and he seemed to be very genuine about it. He may lack social graces and have Syndrome hair, but the group hatred of him seems pretty disproportionate.
I know they tend to overdramatize things in the previews for the next episode, but I really hope they are faking us out. I hope no one actually does something physically damaging to another contestant. I think if they do --it should be grounds for immediate disqualification.

Date: 2007-01-11 06:35 pm (UTC)But jeez ... how could they have screwed this up so badly? I haven't cooked in a restaurant in, like, ten years, and I could see all of the stupid mistakes they made. It's like they just couldn't shift gears from making impressive dishes for a few people to making good food for a lot of people -- but these are all people who know how to do this.
The execution of the "rustic Italian" theme was just all wrong. No wine, the food was stupid, the dessert awful. I did love the guest judge -- "Why's the risotto in a bowl?" "Ummmm.. " "Too much shit on the plate?"
The diner theme wasn't any better. Let's see, diner food -- tempura! Of course! WTF?
I was surprised Michael lasted as long as he did. I've worked with guys like him -- frankly, he would have irritated me more than Marcel.
I think it's going to be Sam, too. Elia just doesn't have the balls to run a kitchen. I have a huge crush on Sam, anyway. He reminds me of a guy I dated before I met Patrick.

Date: 2007-01-11 08:12 pm (UTC)And Ilan has really disappointed me. I liked him so much before all this nonsense.
You've actually cooked in restaurants, but for the first time at one of these things, I thought I could have done a better job than they did.
I wasn't crazy about the guest judge though, bring back Ted Allen!
It seems like on all these shows, there's always some guy who manages to scrape by waaaaay longer than deserved. I thought Betty and Michael both really didn't belong there and was happy to see 'em both go. I would have a much harder time dealing with Michael than Marcel, too.
And dude. How can one not have a crush on Sam. So! Much! Hotness!
