me, and why I rule

lietya's good example.
"We’re conditioned, particularly as women, to be self-deprecating, to not take up space, to not revel in our bodies and ourselves. We can get 150 comments in a thread about when we realized that we were aware our bodies weren’t up to snuff; let’s see how many we can generate praising ourselves.
Your mission: list at least five things you love about your body and yourself. Five is the floor; you can always do more. And no self-deprecation! No offsetting a compliment with a dig."
1. Starting from the top, my hair. It's thick, shiny, and healthy. I don't do much to it chemically and I don't blow-dry, so even between haircuts (which can be a long, long time), I don't get a lot of split-ends or damage to it.
2. Eyes. They're pretty expressive (and go well with the rest of my face, which tends to be quite animated). I have thick lashes, and like that my eyes are somewhat deep-set. And I like the shade of dark brown.
3. My smile. I smile, a lot. And when I do, even the most seemingly grumpiest people have to smile back. My whole face smiles along and my eyes crinkle and it makes me feel happy just to be smiling.
4. My hands and feet. I am startled by the amount of compliments I have gotten about my feet, because (and I'm not bashing here) I feel somewhat neutral about them. But they're shaped nicely and I have long toes (but not so long that they look strange). When I wear sandals, people often comment on them. This drives my one cousin a little crazy, because one of my toes is bent a little, and she feels the praise is disproportionate (it's all in friendly jest, and you know--it's about my freaking feet, so it cracks me up). But time after time, people praise my feet. With my hands, I can see it more. I have long and slender fingers. I have shiny, healthy nails (that I keep medium-short for typing).
5. My figure. This is a funny thing to say in the face of all my weight-loss issues, but while the pounds need to go--I'm very happy with my general body shape. I have a very proportionate figure, and I'm grateful that even the extra weight is pretty evenly distributed. I've known women who are very sad that they pack it all onto booty or belly or wherever. When I lose weight, also, it loses from all over, and doesn't make me feel off-balanced or anything. I am very grateful for that.
That was both surprisingly fun and hard. I kept adding small comments or addenda and finally made myself delete them. I never think less of other people for feeling good about themselves or appreciating something about themselves, but feel weird doing it myself. And then I wanted to lock it to a very small group, but I think I'm going to leave this open. Because I do think it was a very good exercise.

Date: 2007-01-27 11:52 pm (UTC)While I was thrilled to see Jennifer Hudson and America Ferrara win Golden Globes... it only makes me worry that they'll succumb to the pressure to lose weight now. When they're perfect as is. I wish I had the boobs to balance out my bum, but I'm down with my curves (I'll have to sit down and do this meme sometime!).

Date: 2007-01-27 05:45 pm (UTC)You do have gorgeous hair, not to mention the joy of not having to get a haircut every 30 seconds....
A proportionate figure is definitely a blessing no matter the weight.
(I wrote and deleted a bunch of addenda, too.)
