I worry about hours all the time. At this time, I work exclusively for a small Midwestern company with the nicest people ever. While they haven't officially guaranteed me x hours a month, I know they work hard to make sure I can pay my rent.
Regardless, any hint of a slow down on our projects completely freaks me out. Maybe I should have taken a second job, not that they're easy to find these days, but maybe I should have looked. But, I'm easily distracted and I know it. My first priority here (beyond making enough to live on) is school (no matter how much I bitch about it).
I know I'm hyperventilating, and hopefully needlessly. But I can't help it.
The second part to this is: I'm trying to cram more hours per week for the first three weeks in March, because I haven't had a paid vacation in two years. And while this isn't technically a paid vacation, it would be nice to take time off without a paycut. I don't want to work while traveling again, because quite frankly that sucked rather a lot.

Date: 2004-03-10 12:05 pm (UTC)Really! Sounds like a good gig. I thought you were in Seattle, though?
You might want to ask if you can take a paid vacation. I know I started out marking my time-off requests "unpaid," and after a while they told me that they were paying me anyway.
Of course, my time off is a day here or there, or a few hours. I haven't had more than four days off in a row since...uhh...October of 2001, when I went to DC. Before that, when I started working in November of '99 (although that was two jobs ago). Ouchie.
Of course, now I have to schedule a week off, for the move. Doh.

I've been lucky enough to visit the company in question and even meet our amazing, life-saving, incredibly cool bafh. *wink*

You're on salary though, no? 8 hrs a day (sometimes 18), etc? I only work 3 days a week and am paid per hour.
Contract work is just different. I don't blame them at all.
But, I really am looking forward to having a regular job again. I miss having perks.

Date: 2004-03-10 12:32 pm (UTC)I'd love to be able to do that.
Isn't that BOFH?
Not really. I'm paid per hour, I've just been advised to cap it at 8 hours a day. Evidently I'll be compensated for overtime other ways. I just take undeclared time off, personally, though.
Yeah, I wondered if that might be the monkey wrench. Didn't think it'd hurt to ask, though.
Any plans?

Date: 2004-03-10 12:39 pm (UTC)It has its good points. But it also has its bad points.
Isn't that BOFH?
I've heard both. And I thought you were an A not an O. Am I wrong?
Any plans?
None other than: Get certificate. Apply everywhere. Pray to stay in Seattle.

Technically I'm an admin, yes. However, the "Operator" in BOFH is a title from the mainframe days, for the people who did more or less what I do. :-)
Sounds like a plan!

Date: 2004-03-10 12:42 pm (UTC)I couldn't do it long term. I'm too cowardly, neurotic and a complete benefits-slut.
