As I flood the LJ with prattle.

Yesterday was CrazyPants busy with a side of Missed Bus. But today, today she is Calm. Even with the foot-itching, spit-aspirating, sneeze-not-desisting spectacle that my life has become. There's a lot to do, and the day is skipping along like a junior high school girl, but without the OhFuckOhFuckOhFuck Deadline-y-ness of yesterday.

The day is greatly enhanced by a weekend purchase. What purchase? Why a Butterfinger Crisp, my preciouseses!

YAYSUGAR!!!

Also, I've learned that I can have the forbidden dance of love --no, not the lambada--the Diet Pepsi at night if I'm willing to chemically knock myself out with Lunesta afterwards. We can file this under Discoveries that Are Bad. My only defense is that I Really Wanna. I'm not doing this nightly or anything, but I did the last two nights in the row. I blame the Gentlemen Callers of the PNW who come over and entertain me and I want to sleep Never. (*shaking finger at Jeff and Pete*)

Let's see, let's see. What else is current and relevant?

- I really need to pee right now.
- Today was free-lunch day at work. Mmmm. Free.
- I'm still obsessed with making homemade roti.
- I made aloo gobi last night. Pete loved it. I thought it needed something.
- First season of Veronica Mars is incredible.
- It's fucking cold out there today. BOO.
- I have about forty billion cooking projects in my mind, but beyond sitting, quietly chuckling, with my fingers steepled, I've yet to do anything besides talk and buy a lot of bakeware (tart pans, springforms, pie beads, oh my!)
- Having finally put a corkboard-y thing up on my wall, like two weeks ago, I need to print and bring in pictures to put up. It stretches across my entire wall, so I was thinking of printing out some large pictures from Paris (which I miss more and more every day) and then scatter the Loved People everywhere.

Okay, so Immediate Baking Projects I Am Going To Do Just As Soon As I Get Off My Ass:

- round tart with almond cream, raspberries, and chocolate sauce
- rectangular tart with pastry cream and fresh fruit
- sour cream coffee cake
- banana bread
- snickerdoodles for office and for mailing Special People
- mini-cakes for decorating practice
- And as soon as peaches are in their prime: peach pudding cake!
- mini parmesan buns
- another try at a baguette

Other Things Which Are Not Baking, But I Must Make Immediately Also

- homemade harissa
- sweet pea French gnocchi
- nectarine butter (Aside to Jeff: SHUT. UP.)
- aloo paratha
- tomato chutney

I might also try my hand at strawberry jam this summer, since Jeff refuses to make it because he is evil and knows it'll make me cry to do without. (Or, perhaps, he's just been busy. I stand by my comment!)

Hmmmm. Tell me more of this "almond cream" of which you speak, o very-tasty-writing one?

Let's see. How to describe. It's like an almond-y custard? You bake it, and it tastes very almond-y and is really quite tasty!

It's frequently a filling for fruit tarts. You know those pear tarts, that take the whole half pear and thinly slice and then the almond cream cooks up around it?

It's also called frangipane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frangipane) if you've heard of that instead!

The next version of LJ needs to make it so you can feed people in comments.

Verily. Would you mind if I put that comment on [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes?

Haha, no --I don't mind at all.

You know, I just noticed your icon --how lovely!

Icon is me-made, free with credit. This is the other food-related icon I use, although I sometimes use it to comment on animal macros and general cuteness too...

I've made strawberry jam, and it's always a little disappointing to me that it's not 7,000 times better than the stuff I can buy at the store. It's a *little* better, but for the work involved, it never seems worth it.

Now, raspberry jam ... or blackberry jam ... or PEACH PRESERVES. Oh my, yes.

Of course, maybe I just don;t love strawberry jam as much as those others to begin with. Hmmm. Now I've confused myself.

You know --it's funny, because Jeff would make strawberry and raspberry and like you, he is insane, because he vastly prefers the raspberry. But those of us who are sane LOVE the strawberry.

Jeff's, for example, is 7,000 better than anything I've had at a store and really this is a cheap ploy to see if he'll help me make it which really means he'll make it while I squeal from the sidelines. *fingers crossed!*

Do you have a recipe that you're willing to share? One of Brian's friends promised me that she'd teach me to make them but never did.

Oh you bet. Actually, there's this great video on youtube. It's called Manjula's Kitchen. I'm going to call my aunt this weekend and see if her recipe is significantly different, and if it is, I will definitely let you know.

Also, Manjula rolls out the paratha, puts a ball of stuffing in the center, gathers it up like a dumpling, and re-rolls it out. But my auntie does this wack configuration where she rolls out the paratha, cuts it halfway down the center, and then folds it into a triangle shape and re-rolls it. That makes it flakier.

If I make this this weekend, I will take some pictures to show how she does it, because as I just tried to explain it in text, my head exploded.

Mmmmm, roti...
