Maybe it's because it's summer.
Maybe it's because I'm going to Hawaii in a month.
Or maybe it's because every time I open Facebook, it has an ad which asks: "36 and Overweight?"

But, today... today I signed up at a gym.

I've been circling the block on this forever. I wasn't ready for it before, but I finally put together the snippets of information I've been gathering. It's absurdly convenient. It was no-pressure sales. It has a pool. It's month to month with a waived membership fee for the summer. They give free towels and keys to the locker room. It's a minor detail, but I'm orgasmic about not having to buy yet another lock. Their cardio equipment has individual tvs that work with any regular headphones. It has a pool. I'll likely be going at 4:30, which means almost no waiting at the machines. I'll be leaving just as the busiest time kicks in. IT HAS A POOL! And compared to the other gyms I've seen, it's actually offering services commensurate with its monthly rate. I really liked the woman who'd given me the no-fuss, no-pressure information on pricing and also gave me my tour today. She was nice and friendly, but clearly knows that her gym sells itself. We had a bonding moment over our repulsion for Glen Swain, owner of Rain Fitness (NEVER EVER EVER JOIN THAT GYM).

I miss lifting weights. Hell, I miss having arm muscles. Tired of feeling tired and I know lack of exercise is the culprit at this point.

And as much as I had to bully myself out of the inertia for watering the freaking plants today, I'm looking forward to doing something about my buddhaesque belly. You even get two free visits with a personal trainer, and I'm signed up for one after my dreaded doctor's appt on Friday morning.

Here's hoping I'm as ready as I feel!

Good for you on the gym...it sounds pretty awesome, actually. Now you've got me thinking about trying to find something similar. I've never joined a gym before; the hard sell and scary gym cliques always put me off, but this gives me hope that maybe there's someplace out there that actually wouldn't suck.

Good luck to you -- I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!

This place totally rocks actually. Just had my first trip there today. Not a lot of spandexy bodies clogging the space, but just normal people of all age quietly doing their thing. Loved it!!

I hope you can find something similarly awesome!

YAY POOL!!

I am trying to work up the courage to go use the AC at the university after work. But I am scared of being seen by college kids in my bathing suit. And worrying about where to put my glasses while I swim. And how to find the locker rooms. And if I need a bathing cap.

ARGH!

Why scared? Scared that they'll pounce you for being adorable? :D

Trust me. If I can do it, you can do it. Just like the first day of work--anticipation is the suXX0r, and then it'd be awesome!

God, I love swimming. I'm going to try out their pool tomorrow!

I am gping to be brave and go check it out after work tomorrow.

Then maybe I can see if I can work 7:30-3:30, or just take a half hour lunch and go after work. I';d rather not go at 4, as then I'd be driving home w/ way more traffic than I currently have!

YAY POOL!

I know, it's all about not sitting in traffic on the way home, isn't it? I do everything I can to get out of here by 4 so I don't have to face the Demon Beast of Eastside Traffic.

But YAY POOL!!

Yay! I hope the gym turns out to be exactly as glorious as it sounds, and that you're pleased with it. I know what you mean about liking the arm muscles!

I remember how much swimming made you happy and relaxed you; it seems like a fine idea to get back into it.

(good luck with the dreaded doctor's appointment, too... oddly enough, I have a DDA that afternoon, which I think means we'll be having a moment of cross-coastal solidarity.)

It was! I am! And owie already!

Good luck with your own DDA --I'll be thinking of you as I grit and bear my way through it. *hug*

Funny, that ad for me says "30 and overweight?"

And does it show you a picture of a woman with really cut abs?

Targeted shame-based marketing .... wave of the future!

Congrats on the decision! Swimming sucks ;)

How was it? And even though I hate it, I'm swimming tomorrow too...it's all Martin thinks he can handle until his ankle improves and I don't want to do treadmill or ellipse.

Actually--it was pretty great. It's a really nice club and low key. I'm going to swim tomorrow too! Yay!

Man, that's awesome.

I've been wanting like anything to join a gym. There's one right near my apartment, too, that's really nice, though it doesn't have a pool *sad face*.

However, it is simply not in the cards, financially, at the moment. *more sad face*

Hopefully I'll get a higher-paying job soon. And when I do, WATCH OUT, GYM PEOPLE.

Dude, there was no way on earth or any other planetary body that I could have even considered doing this before, um, like yesterday.

But when you're ready, for serious, you'll kick ass without even bothering to take names!

As one who struggles with the exercise issue herself, I can relate to the whole "circling the block" thing. Congrats on your decision (and hey--a pool AND no locks! cool!).

I don't feel like much of a "stud" at the moment (I'm really struggling with the exercise thing since the surgery), but thanks!
