Am I more pissed off at McCain & Cronies for making such a specious and pander-fucking selection for VP?

Or am I more pissed off at the naysayers (GET OFF MY SIDE, FUCKWITS) who attacked Palin on bogus issues when there was a VAST AND MIGHTY PLETHORA OF GOOD REASONS TO ATTACK HER AS A CANDIDATE FOR VP. Stop giving them actual reasons to dismiss our incredibly valid censure of the candidate. Jesus motherfucking christ on a goat fucking donkey.

AAAAAAARGHHHHHHHH *HEADGOBOOM*

[One should be cautious when watching MSNBC while one's lunch heats up. Now I've left messy bits of smoldering brain all over our nice communal lounge.]

Seriously, everybody OUT OF THE POOL. Time outs for everyone.

*scowl*

I know. I know. I'm joining the ranks who can't STFU about Palin. But OMFG.

More pissed off at McCain. If he didn't choose her, the naysayers wouldn't have had a chance to piss you off.

Fair enough. But AAAAAARGH. Can we be a little less stupid over here. We're supposed to represent the voice of sanity --and we could be doing it SO MUCH BETTER.

Yeah, the moment I saw the "VPILF" picture I was like, "Wow, thanks, asshole, you just gave them a whole lot of cover to hide behind."

The rabid right-wingers on one BBS I inhabit started out with the "MILF? She's a GILF!!" right away.

Personally, I see her as Dan Quayle in a dress... Maybe a little smarter--hard to get much dumber--but much less experienced than mister potatoE-head.

That's a pretty good comparison. God. I'd almost forgotten about Mr. I Wish I Spoke Latin While I'm in Latin America!"

Oh definitely the first thing. I mean, there've always been the dumbass naysayers who don't do our side any favors, but they have theirs, too, and when you think about it, it's part of the white noise in the background, which is exactly where it belongs.

What's different is that the other team is superbly talented at tugging out those threads of crazy and dumbassery and pounding everyone over the head with it until everyone forgets what the real arguments were. Say what you will about their party and its actions, they are a sight to behold on this kind of thing. Which is part of our side's problem, in that we're still playing by rules that assumes both players are interested in good governance and genuine concern, and that both players have, you know, scruples. When the other team won't stop at anything to win? Yeah, pretty much the definition of bringing a knife to a gun fight.

It's frustrating as hell that we don't have the kind of rigid discipline they do when it comes to message, although if we have to be lobotomized footsoldiers to accomplish that then I'll take the disorganized party any day. Also frustrating that we can't shut the people up on our side that give them ammunition. But from watching their propaganda machine in action -- and that thing is a well-oiled machine, let me tell you -- if it wasn't that, it'd be something else.

Fair enough--but god, it makes me SO MAD to watch time get sucked up over how lame our arguments are, when there are really good points not getting the same air time.

We're the good guys, we should act like it.

But you make good points about how good They are at 'tugging out those threads of crazy' --the whole thing makes me ill.

It kinda reminds me of the Clarence Thomas hearings from about 20 years ago. He was a very unqualified candidate for the Supreme Court, yet the matter the Senate was focused on was Anita Hill's objections. The person who chaired the judiciary committee was Joe Biden. He should have found a way to put a stop to such unproductive hearings and focus on that even the NAACP thought Clarence Thomas was woefully inexperienced to be a Supreme Court judge. While he has learned over the years, he is still a sub-standard judge that we are forced to tolerate, because his candidacy wasn't handled right.

It's a shame that people often don't learn from history.

I agree--it's terrible that the focus is often so wrong in these cases!

substantive issues aside, VPILF is hilarious. GOP is going to scream sexism anyway (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jr5__xARtHsJJR-T6uwvN31ZdEIAD92VI5O00), so we may as well get a laugh out of it

I really like what you said the other day, too, btw --about how this shows how poor McCain's judgment is. I meant to note that earlier!

I vote for the second, absolutely, 'cause it's a reminder of every shitty little bit of sexism I see every fucking day, that's built into our culture and no matter how hard we've worked, we still haven't gotten rid of it. And all those times I've been going along, thinking I'm hanging with cool people who I have stuff in common with, and then somebody busts out with some stupid bullshit and it's like a slap in the face. And how people will deny, deny, deny that they have anything to do with sexism, that they are somehow pure and untouched by societal influence, and it PISSES ME OFF.

Geez, do you think I might have strong feelings, here?

Nominating her, OTOH... *shrug*. I expect the Republican Party to pander to their base, so it's hard for me to get worked up over it. It's not like I expect better of a guy who's spent the last 8 years selling out most of the principles he claimed to have, to kiss up to his party's power-brokers.

On the other hand, it's convenient to have such a big fucking blatant example to point to of how YES DEMOCRATS CAN BE SEXIST ASSHATS TOO. For, like, when people get on with, "hey, don't be all bitchy at me, I'm a good liberal" type stuff.

Amen, Pam. To all of that. It's built in to such a degree that I think it's surprising I don't feel more outraged on a daily basis.

And maybe it's their job (?) to pander to their base, but I still find it utterly repellent. I mean, fine--we have grossly disparate political values, but if they were at least trying to candidatize someone who wasn't a fucking lunatic, someone with a lot of experience who could bring someone useful to the job.

McCain makes me so ill. I once thought pretty well of him and he's turned around and sold out so emphatically that the hypocrisy alone makes me queasy.

Oo, Cat, did you ever read Shakesville? They do a pretty good job of keeping up with the current politics without ignoring the rampant sexism and racism. http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com
