bloodsucking fiends
Jan. 28th, 2009 12:00 pmIs anyone else watching True Blood?
So I'm not quite done with the book. But I found myself curious about the HBO show since I've loved so many of them--Deadwood, Rome, and I'm sure others I can't think of. But I found myself with the chance to watch episode 1, and it's um... interesting.
- whoa to the insane sex (whoever mentioned that in comments awhile ago)
- the acting seems pretty uniformly bad by most of the principles (chew, chew, chew)
- the one way it's not faithful to the book is that she can hear Sam, which is a change I really don't like
- I love Sookie's relationship with her grandmother who is adorable
- I so do not find Vampire Bill sexy at all --I would be all over Sam, though
- Anna Pacquin is lovely, but her blonde hair looks so wrong on her to me, I don't even know what to do. I mean, it's pretty hair, and it's not like she doesn't have the skin tone to carry the color, but it just feels wrong. Also, she looks like she's twelve.
I think I may keep watching for now because some parts of it are funny. (And I know any show can take a few episodes to get into.) But GOD, so much bad acting and I think bad direction. All the vampire stuff seems extra cheesy. Don't do super-speed motion if you can't do it well. (They can't.) And their insta-on vamp fangs are cheesier than the fake ones I wore for Halloween a decade ago. They make them look intensely goofy.

Date: 2009-01-28 08:19 pm (UTC)It's very watchable in a "brain off" kind of way. I've seen up to ep 8, I think, and some parts are pretty hilarious. They've added a few plotlines of their own and changed a few characters beyond recognition, but on the whole the series is an entertaining experience.
The books are still my big love, though. MmmmmEric. <3

And...I've only been briefly introduced to Eric, but I rather like him, too!

Eric's a little colder in the series, at least in the episodes I've seen so far. He and Pam are pure awesomeness and comedy gold in the books, and I hope that'll carry over to the series eventually.

Date: 2009-01-29 02:07 am (UTC)Leigh has done a small rant-y type post on how the placement of the fangs looks cheesy and weird.
I think Anna Paquin looks rather nice as a blonde. The show is a nice bit of diverting fluff, but I did make an error in reading all the books... a lot of the plots are extrapolated from the books, and so they lose some of the suspense .... plus you know who dies and when.
Additionally, the books veer off into some very weird directions....
If You want to enjoy the show for what it is, don't read the books.
