The Town
I was so excited to see this movie, and it just didn't quite deliver for me. I love Rebecca Hall and so many of the cast (JOHN HAM!), but in this movie I often couldn't understand people's motivations or actions or choices. A lot of fine character-driven work, but the plot just left me dissatisfied--maybe it was supposed to?
The Kid's Are All Right
While the performances were fine, I so disliked everyone. Not the kids maybe. (They were all right, heh.) I wanted to slap Bening and Moore and especially Ruffalo's pretentious clueless dip of a character. But I ultimately couldn't get over the fact that this movie had lesbian Julianne Moore (not a bisexual woman) start humping Mark Ruffalo. Yes, gay couples are just like hetero couples and they can have issues and problems and cheat on each other--but it just pushed the wrong buttons for me. For so many gay people--particularly women, I think, it's implied too often that all a gay woman needs is the right deep dickin' --and it's not true. Most of the gay women I know would be more likely to have an affair with a giraffe as they would a man. It's just not something that works for them. Anymore than a straight guy is going to be pissed at his wife and start screwing the guy next door. I've heard the arguments against this issue, but I don't care. I decided to watch it in spite of knowing this, and I just don't care about the arguments made to support the affair.
I would have liked the movie much more without this element.
