and the awesomeness continues
Sep. 9th, 2011 11:48 amBlathering about A Feast for Crows. (About 1/5th of the way in.)
When I started the book, it just made me impatient. One of the standards of fantasy books that I hate is the almighty prologue. Seemingly always told from some random POV and I'm usually twitching to get to my specific storyline.
As crabby as I was when I opened the book, I sort of found life at the Citadel fascinating--and even super relevant since we know Sam's going there. And then I squealed with delight when I recognized Jaqen H’ghar as the alchemist who ended Pate's fate.
But then it was off to the Iron Islands--which I fucking hate. I hate the Greyjoys. I hate their entire existence and wish they would go away. And then when we had another random POV (which, there seems to be a lot of in this book) character, I started to fume but then I found that I love the Dornish! The Prince seems curious, the Sand Snakes are hilarious. So I didn't mind that.
Anyhow. A Cersei POV!! That has been rewarding. She is so fucking un-self-aware it's hilarious. It's fascinating watching her plot away, thinking herself some evil genius, but watching her just blunder left and right. And not get any respect--because she really doesn't deserve any. It's horrifying watching her mother Tommen.
But Uncle Kevan--I fucking love that guy. I totally hooted out loud at their exchange. "Sure, I'll be Hand. But you go away and I'll do your job, too. Since you SUCK." He just kept calmly pointing out what a moron she was. "Jamie is an idiot." "And you asked him to be Hand. What does that make you?" BWAHAHA!
And Arya. I'm going to mourn when she dies. (Because I'm thoroughly convinced she is too awesome for GRRM to leave alive.) Not only does that girl have gumption, one of the things I love about her is how she almost unthinkingly provides relief to people in need--when others around her don't even think about it. That caged guy begging for water. And now that she's in Braavos, the guy at the temple. In my daydreams, she finds Syrio Forel, who is somehow not dead.
Good to see a Brienne POV, too. I can't imagine her finding Sansa. And I can't imagine where her fate will lead her. But I'm curious. I'm dying for the upcoming Sansa chapter. But there's only one in the entire chapter. But then I see there's an Alayne, and I don't know if that's a Sansa name change, and oh fuck--I should just read and not be SherlockHolmsing over the TOC. BUT GAAAAH. I don't want Baelish pawing at her, it's too gross and horrifying!!
Continue to love Jamie and his tragic POVs. Intensely curious to see where his storyline goes.
And Sam, dear Sam. I love the notion of him being a maester! He seems so well suited for that! More horrors from Sam's memory of the sheer awfulness of his father--who isn't just some phantom in the past, but an actual person of interest over in King's Landing. Kevan even suggests him as Hand! How fucked up would that be?
Jon seems to be making wise choices as Lord Commander. Especially in telling Sam he's not allowed to call himself craven anymore. DUDE STOP SAYING THAT IT WAS ONLY THE DRAGONGLASS, YOU WIELDED THE DRAGONGLASS! I hope fervently that we see Sam develop some confidence and ultimately tell his fucktarded father to fuck OFF. Though this is GRRM so Sam will die and his father will get a pot of gold or something.
Interesting that Stannis is still there, simmering on the backburner. As much as I hate the Lannisters. As much as Tommen is not actually a legitimate heir to the throne, I wonder if the realm was given over to Kevan to manage, and Tommen was raised properly, if that wouldn't ultimately be better for the realm than Stannis (the actual legitimate heir) and his sense of black/white morality. Still frustrated that Renly and then Robb divided themselves.
Anyhow. Loving it!
