random bits
Aug. 2nd, 2005 10:37 am1. It's incredible how restorative a full night's sleep can be. Came home straight from work yesterday, had dinner, watched some tv, did my French homework, and tucked myself into bed at 9:45pm. I didn't fall asleep right away, but I think the rest did me good. Also, spooning with Hobbsie is restorative for the soul. He's been very lovely-dovey lately.
2. It's also amazing how, when faced with writing a serious paper, I find that I cannot proceed until my desk is immaculate. This was the case in college, it is the case now. On the other hand, I finally filed the mountain of paperwork that was on my desk. And now I'm LJing to avoid it further.
3. I've finally caught up with all my laundry and everything I own is now clean. I still have to empty my dresser drawers which are filled with things I don't wear, and make room for the stuff heaped on my desk at home which is the stuff I wear regularly.
4. I also realized how frequently I was coming in to work late (usually 20-30min). My work is getting done fine, and people are laid back here. But as a contractor, hoping to be hired, it's a stupid move. I need to stop doing that. Which means I need to get to sleep at a reasonable hour, which means I need to calm my freaking lifestyle down a bit. I got to work at 8am today (so I can leave early for my French lesson) but in general, I need to work consistent hours, dammit.
5. I need to stop by Fred Meyer on the way home tonight to return the two frames that were too small, buy Scrabble (Which, omfgyay. I finally realized that my mission in life is to find a man who loves to play Scrabble and will play it with me on a regular basis in exchange for home-cooked meals), and buy cat food/litter. Also, people food.
6. I can't freaking wait for the weekend. I mean, more than usual. Jeff's kindly agreed to take care of Hobbes on Friday night, so Sarah and I will come to work with our bags packed and will try to leave by 4:30 for Sequim. *hopping with excitement*

Date: 2005-08-02 06:33 pm (UTC)I think I have the same problem with clutter, but it's winning so far -- I have no place to put it all! Aiee!

Date: 2005-08-02 08:18 pm (UTC)This whole weekend is going to be about sleep, Scrabble, and reading books. It's the perfect geek vacation!

Date: 2005-08-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(I'd never heard of Go before, but I looked it up on Wikipedia. What a complex game!)
What got you into the game? How long have you been playing?

Date: 2005-08-02 11:29 pm (UTC)A friend of mine from high school got me into it about 18 years ago. Although there was a few years' gap during and after college when I didn't get to play much, but I've been going to the Congress since 2000, and I've improved an awful lot since then.
I've been running the Portland Club for about that long (5 years, not 18).
As for how good I am, you can look at the attendees list I'm only about halfway up the chart. (Although that does have me one stone weaker than I am officially.) And that list is pretty representative of the range in the real world -- from absolute beginners to one of the very strongest players alive. (Chicago and York Congresses were great for this -- we had some legendary players, including the only Western player ever to reach 9 dan.)

Good luck at the games, and I really look forward to reading your write-up about it!

Date: 2005-08-03 05:06 pm (UTC)I'll try not to disappoint with the writeup. Which reminds me, I think I never got around to posting about Niagara Falls from the last trip, did I? Bah. That and my apple bobbing victoryy. Bah!

Date: 2005-08-03 06:21 pm (UTC)And you won't disappoint. But you haven't written about Niagara Falls or apple bobbing, yet! Do it! Do it!
Also, we need more photographs! I really loved that shot of the (I think it was..) lamp post against the blue sky.

Date: 2005-08-03 06:44 pm (UTC)More photos, yes! But oh, my burgeoning To Do list. It grows like a weed on mutant fertilizer. Someone else is helping with the tournament details this year, but that means he's on top of it and it doing lots of the stuff no, when it should be done, so I've got stuff to do earlier.
And yes, that photo was of a lamp post outside of Lloyd Cinemas. I need to take the time to take more photos, too. And find the time to organize them too. (I have yet to write my PHP photo browser to allow me to look through my old photos, or find a decent thumbnail maker, or install Photoshop on my G5. All these things hinder me.)
So much to do!

Date: 2005-08-03 07:37 pm (UTC)I have to organize photos, too. I have to make this scrapbook for one of my cousins. I don't normally scrapbook, but it seemed like a fun idea after her visit.
I have a scarf I haven't knitted in ages. Quilting projects that are beyond dusty on the shelves.
And there's all the stuff I want to learn! Books to read on Genetics and Bioinformatics. Perl scripting. Developing better CSS skills.
There's never enough time!!
